Bar restaurant chain reveals more on its plans for The Grand

THE operator behind plans to create two new bar restaurants at Birmingham’s The Grand hotel have announced more details about the scheme.

Restaurant and bar operator Living Ventures is bringing its Gusto and The Alchemist brands to the newly-refurbished hotel. The move follows its decision to open its first bar and restaurant in the city, The Botanist, on nearby Temple Street, last year.

Hortons is in the process of restoring the Grade II listed former hotel building. The retail accommodation along Colmore Row comprises ten units totalling more than 24,000 sq ft.

Living Ventures is taking units 8, 9 and 10 at The Grand. The space totals approximately 10,000 sq ft over the ground and lower ground floors.

Gusto, inspired by the traditional grand cafes of Europe, will occupy 5,191 sq ft on the corner of Colmore Row and Church Street. The Alchemist, a bar specialising in cocktails, has the neighbouring 4,912 sq ft unit fronting Colmore Row.

Gusto, which will occupy unit 10, and The Alchemist have taken a 25-year lease at a rent of £215,000 per annum.

Living Ventures will take control of the Colmore Row premises in spring 2016, with Gusto and The Alchemist expected to open in the summer.

Living Ventures has now submitted planning applications to Birmingham City Council for illuminated and non-illuminated signage for the facilities.

It has also applied to install retractable awnings, six bespoke brass wall lights, infra-red wall heaters and brass-finished door handles.

There will also be an outside seating area and the company has submitted a separate application to the council for permission for a pavement café.

The company said it considered that the external proposals would not impact the heritage of the building or the surrounding conservation area.

“Instead, they will add to the vibrancy and high calibre tenant mix of the Grand Hotel building supporting the wider uplift of the area,” it said.

Jeremy Roberts, chief executive officer of the company, said: “We have had our sights on Birmingham for some time; finding the right locations is always key. Colmore Row is the city’s most prestigious street and The Grand undoubtedly its most iconic building.

“The Botanist, which we opened in April, he been popular from day one. We look forward to bringing two different but equally exciting brands to the city.”
