Millennium Point joins world’s elite museums to stage exhibition

BIRMINGHAM’S Millennium Point has been chosen as one of only 15 venues in the world to stage a new photographic exhibition.

The venue joins other high profile museums and galleries across the globe, including the Science Museum in London, the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow, Russia and The Africa Centre for Population Health.

The images on display have all been submitted as part of this year’s Wellcome Image Awards, a competition that rewards those creating the best science images.

Now in its 15th year, the Wellcome Image Awards feature themes extending from social history to contemporary healthcare, biomedical science and clinical medicine.

This year’s images include pathways of nerve fibres in the brain, delicate golden scales on a Madagascan sunset moth, a digitally reconstructed skeleton showing atheroma and the ‘furring up’ of arteries that supply blood to the brain, in someone who has had a stroke.

Working with Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum and Birmingham Museums Trust, Millennium Point has been selected to showcase the final 20 images in its Level 2 Pop-Up Space until Sunday April 10.

A selection of the winning images will also be on display in the entrance to Thinktank’s Planetarium from Wednesday April 13.

Neil Anderson, director of marketing, communications and events at Millennium Point, said: “As a destination where science, technology and learning come to life, it is a huge privilege for Millennium Point to be selected as one of the venues to exhibit the finalists’ work. We are looking forward to adding our own creativity to the exhibition in order to spark imagination amongst visitors and bring the images to life.”

Catherine Draycott, head of Wellcome Images and chair of the judging panel, said: “Wellcome Images receives hundreds of extraordinary images every year and we’re very excited to share this year’s selection of winning images. We are thrilled that the winners’ work will be displayed in more places than ever before and we can’t wait to see how Millennium Point put its own stamp on the exhibition.”
