City marathon to return after 30 years

A MARATHON will be staged in Birmingham for the first time in more than 30 years.

The Birmingham International Marathon will take place in October 2017, starting at Alexander Stadium and taking in landmarks around the city.

The provisional route would take runners past Villa Park, Aston Hall, Barton Arms, Selfridges Building, Digbeth, Cannon Hill Park, Selly Park, Bournville, Edgbaston and finish on Broad Street.

Mark Hollinshead, chief executive of the Great Run Company, said: “Not only will this be a great event for British elite runners, we will also aim to attract runners of all abilities from the UK and beyond, to run for charity, for the challenge or just for fun.”

The race will be part of the Great Run British Marathon Series and will be staged on the same day as the well-established Great Birmingham Run half marathon.
