Five-year plan aims to catapult energy policy into sustainable future

THE Energy Systems Catapult, based in Birmingham, has launched its five-year plan to help the creation of a clean, intelligent energy system for the UK.

The Catapult wants to deliver a transformation through focusing on three core activities – whole system analysis, accelerating commercialisation, and testing and demonstration.

It was set up in response to the identified need to develop a more sustainable energy policy for the UK and to help the UK capture commercial opportunities and create businesses across the energy sector.

The facility is planned as an energy industry hub to promote innovation and showcase new technologies.

Philip New, chief executive of the Energy Systems Catapult, said: “Taking a whole systems approach is necessary if the substantial benefits of transforming the UK energy system and the many opportunities for UK businesses are to be captured.

“But we are under no illusions – to deliver our plan successfully we will need to collaborate across the sector with Government, industry, academia and consumers, and help a stronger sense of consensus on the priorities for energy emerge. I’m pleased to say we have started doing that.”

The delivery plan looks at the drivers of radical change in the energy industry, including the challenges of decarbonisation, an ageing infrastructure, an emergence of new technologies, security of supply, and shifts in society’s expectations.

The official launch takes place today at the Institution of Engineering and Technology in London.
