Halfords set to cycle back into Birmingham as new store revealed

CYCLING retailer Halfords is to open a new shop in Birmingham, it has been revealed.

The Redditch-based company is set to take a unit within the refurbished Grand Hotel scheme in Colmore Row.

The unit, at 35-37 Colmore Row, marks a return to the second city for Halfords and the shop is expected to create a number of new jobs.

The company has submitted plans for one of the retail units fronting Colmore Row but rather than a regular Halfords outlet, the unit will be one of the retailer’s specialist Cycle Republic shops.

Cycle Republic is Halfords’ standalone cycling brand and the retail strategy has been to target high profile shopping locations around the UK. The brand currently has five outlets, with the others being in London, Bristol, Norwich, Nottingham and Manchester.

Bourne Wood Partnership has filed a planning application with Birmingham City Council on behalf of Halfords seeking listed building consent for the work being carried out on the unit.

The application says the overall layout of the unit will remain unchanged, however, changes are proposed to the existing internal stairwell and staircase, which will be painted yellow.

There will be a small amenity area and store in the basement area and a bike workshop to the rear of the ground floor area.

The Cycle Republic look is said to be “very rustic” and the existing walls are to be either painted white or have a clear seal installed on them with a mesh wall hanging system being attached for merchandising purposes.
