8 ways to cope with heat in your office

We don’t know about you, but it is Costa del TheBusinessDesk.com right now. The next few days are going to be an absolute scorcher, so get yourself prepared for the heat in your workplace with these simple tips…

Ditch the caffeine
How will you cope? Well much better probably as caffeine dehydrates you so replace your morning coffee with water in the morning to keep you going.

Keep drinking
Even if you’re not thirsty, it is important to stay hydrated throughout the day. And we have bad news for you, but alcohol isn’t going to help either as it is mildly diuretic, so a lunch time pint isn’t a good idea…

Get jobs done early
If you usually leave all the important stuff until after lunch, find a way of squeezing them in the morning instead as when it gets really warm in the afternoon, you’ll struggle to concentrate as much.

Time to get the fans out
Here we go again, the office arguments about where to place the fans are in full swing. But plenty of cold air will get you through the day, so make sure there is enough to go around everyone. Alternatively, if there are no fans in the office, find a cool place where you can escape to every 20 minutes.

Think before you speak
Intense heat can leave people in your office feeling a bit…snappy. So be on your best behaviour and hold back on the office jokes, arguments, tears and heat definitely do not mix well.

Eat light
Instead of a three course meal at lunch, eat light with salad or sandwich as heavy meals add heat to your body and will make you lethargic, therefore not very productive! Alternatively, eat small portions throughout the day to keep you ticking over.

Keep it loose
Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing. If your workplace has a strict dress code, try speaking to your boss and ask if there are any ways the rules could be slightly relaxed whilst you all melt in the office.

If you really can’t cope…
Place damp towels around neck and shoulders to cool yourself. However, cool water is better than icy cold, which causes your blood vessels to constrict and slow, so don’t go mad. Still struggling? Head off a little earlier to stock up on ice to get you through the night!
