Cathedral sheds light on Something Good

AFTER marking its 300th anniversary with the launch of its art programme Something Good last year, Birmingham Cathedral is all set to light up the city once again. This time however, the public will play a key role in the project.

From Monday to Friday next week, small electronic voting boxes will appear in hairdressers, grocers, community centres and libraries across six Birmingham neighbourhoods, asking people to answer a different question each day.

The Measures of Us project will be asking locals broad yet simple questions such as “have you laughed today?” or “are you looking forward to next year?”which will later be displayed by large artworks in their community.

Artistic director at Something Good Orit Azaz said: “Measures of Us is a new collaboration between artists, technologists, faith groups and the public. It is a pilot, an experiment to explore potential for a city wide creative conversation using light based artworks in surprising ways.

It is a way of bringing people from different areas and backgrounds together and creating a sense of connection across different parts of the city.”

Something Good’s experiment will reach its climax on Saturday, December 3, as the results from the communities come together to create an illuminating installation in Cathedral Square. Visitors will also be able to answer questions as well as find out how others are feeling throughout the evening.
