Fatal accident to keep part of M6 shut for rush hour

8.30AM UPDATE Highways England has said the incident has now been cleared and the roads have been reopened.

7.10AM UPDATE Warwickshire Police has reopened lane three on the southbound side but said delays are still likely.

5.50AM
TWO people have died following a crash on the southbound side of the M6 early on Monday morning.

The incident, near to Corley Service Station, involved one vehicle and happened at around 1.50am this morning. Warwickshire Police has confirmed the two people were declared dead at the scene.
Accident investigation work will mean the road is “likely to remain closed for some time”, the police said, with Highways England currently estimating it will be around 8am before it is reopened.
The M6 is closed southbound between J4A (M42) and J3 (Coventry). Diversions are in place but people are being urged to avoid the road if possible.
Highways England has suggested two diversion routes:
– Motorists will leave the M6 at J4A and head north on the M42 to J9, exit the M42 at J9 and take the 5th exit to join the A446 Lichfield Road to head southbound.
– Continue along the A446 through Coleshill where the road will merge with the A452 Chester Road.
– At the A452/A45 roundabout take the 1st exit and head east on the A45 Birmingham Road travelling passed Coventry until the junction with the A46.
– At the roundabout with the A45/A46 take the 2nd exit and head northbound to re-join the M6 at J2.
Alternative diversion route:
– Motorists will leave the M6 at J4A and head north on the M42 and continue until J10/A5, at this roundabout take the 3rd exit and head southbound on the A5 Watling Street.
– Continue along the A5 until the roundabout with the M69 and here take the 4th exit and travel south on the M69 to re-join the M6 at J2.
