5 things to do in the West Midlands this weekend

NOT sure what to get up to this weekend? From ballet to food festivals, there’s plenty on offer across the West Midlands.

1. Circus of Horrors circus of horrors
Date: Saturday March 11
Location: Victoria Hall, Stoke-on-Trent
The Circus of Horrors celebrates its 21st anniversary as it takes to the road with its latest incarnation “The Never-ending Nightmare”. Featuring an amalgamation of bizarre, brave & beautiful acts all woven into a ‘Alice in Horrorland type’ story, the performance uses Goth and steampunk imagery and references burlesque and Victorian freak shows.

Location: Birmingham Hippodrome

Set in a small mining town in the north east of England, against the background of the 1984/’85 miners’ strike, Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dream come true. Follow Billy’s journey as he stumbles out of the boxing ring and into a ballet class where he discovers a passion for dance that changes his life forever. Featuring music by Elton John and impressive choreography, the show has captivated millions around the world.

3. Crufts crufts
Date: Until Sunday March 12
Location: Genting Arena,  Birmingham
Holding over 6,000 dog lovers and 22,000 canines, the Genting Arena will be packed with action for the annual Crufts show. After agility, flyball and showing displays as well as the obedience ring programme and good citizen dog scheme, one lucky dog will be crowned Best in Show.

Date: Saturday March 11
Location: Fargo Village, Coventry

If a room full of Cheddar, Stilton, Applewood, chutney, jams and port is your idea of heaven, then head down to Fargo Village this Saturday and Sunday from 11am. Celebrating everything cheese, there will be plenty of stallholders, samples and competitions at the Market Hall.

5. Chess chess
Date: Until Saturday March 11
Location: The Core Theatre, Solihull
Written by Tim Rice and ABBA’s very own Benny & Bjorn, Chess includes hits such as “One Night in Bangkok” , “Anthem” and of course, “I Know Him So Well”. Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, a romance develops between a chess player and the manager of another; will love unite nations or cause treachery on the world stage? From Bangkok to Budapest, the players, lovers, politicians and spies all struggle to get the upper-hand.
