Rolls-Royce secures Asian airline engine deal

AERO engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has won an order from Air China worth £1.12bn to power 20 of the company’s planes.

The order is split equally between 10 Airbus A350 XWBs and 10 A330s and it includes the company’s ‘TotalCare’ long-term service agreement.

Rolls-Royce said it would be providing Trent XWB engines for the A350 XWBs and Trent 700 engines for the A330s.

It will be seen as a major boost to the company after one of its engines exploded on a Quantas A380 flight earlier this month.

Air China senior vice-president He Li said: “We look forward to bringing
the Trent XWB into service with our airline to provide us with fuel-efficient power for the A350 XWB and adding to our Trent 700-powered fleet.

“We have now selected this engine on four separate occasions. Our Trent-powered fleet now stands at 78 aircraft either in service or on order.”

Steve Miller, civil aerospace vice-president China for Rolls-Royce, added: “Our world class technology and service support enables our customers to achieve unrivalled performance benefits.

“We are very proud that Air China has again put their trust in us with this new order for the Trent XWB engine and a follow-on
order for the Trent 700.”

Since the start of July, Derby-based Rolls-Royce says it has won more than $4.5bn in orders for the Trent 700, capturing 75% of orders for the A330 aeroplanes over the last three years.

The Trent 700 was the only engine specifically designed for the A330 and over 1,000 are now in service or on firm order, it said.
