The UK economy went into reverse in September, caused by the cyber attack on Jaguar Land Rover and its subsequent shutdown.<\/p>\n

The weak GDP figures will further increase the likelihood of the Bank of England cutting interest rates in December.<\/p>\n

New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates a 0.1% drop in GDP. It also revised down the August figure, from 0.1% to 0% growth.<\/p>\n

This resulted in the third quarter showing just 0.1% growth, down from 0.7% in January-March. G7 economies Germany, Italy and Canada have each reported third-quarter figures of 0.0% or 0.1%.<\/p>\n

Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who will deliver her second Budget in two weeks, said: \u201cWe had the fastest-growing economy in the G7 in the first half of the year, but there\u2019s more to do to build an economy that works for working people.<\/p>\n

“At my Budget later this month, I will take the fair decisions to build a strong economy that helps us to continue to cut waiting lists, cut the national debt and cut the cost of living.”<\/p>\n

The latest GDP data captures the crisis at JLR, which the Cyber Monitoring Centre had categorised as “a Category 3 systemic event”.<\/p>\n

The shutdown and the impact on the wider supply chain resulted in a 29% drop in output in the motor manufacturing sector, which pulled down overall GDP by 0.17 percentage points.<\/p>\n

However the wider economy continues to be sluggish.<\/p>\n

Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist at Capital Economic, said: “The big picture is that the economy is struggling to gain decent momentum in the face of higher taxes and soft overseas activity.<\/p>\n

“With tax rises in the upcoming Budget likely to trim GDP by around 0.2% in 2026, there is little reason to think that GDP growth will accelerate much from here.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
