A \u00a35m heritage-led redevelopment is underway in Birmingham\u2019s Jewellery Quarter, with a long-vacant industrial building set to be brought back into commercial use.<\/p>\n
The Construction Consultants has been appointed by ETME Group to provide project management, quantity surveying and employer\u2019s agent services on the restoration of the Grade II-listed Derwent Works building on Constitution Hill.<\/p>\n
Dating back to the late 19th century, the former pressings and stampings factory was originally occupied by Taylor & Challen, a manufacturer whose products ranged from coins to industrial machinery. The business vacated the site in the 1970s, and the building has since fallen into disrepair.<\/p>\n
The scheme will convert the historic structure into a mixed-use development comprising 32 apartments alongside four ground-floor retail units. Proposals include sensitive rooftop extensions and the installation of a new energy-efficient roofing system designed to improve resilience against weathering, UV exposure and ozone, while respecting the building\u2019s listed status.<\/p>\n
Work on the project is expected to be completed later this year. The Construction Consultants have been involved from the early planning stages, supporting the developer through the technical and regulatory challenges associated with refurbishing a listed asset in a constrained urban location.<\/p>\n
