Telford & Wrekin Council has confirmed plans to progress the redevelopment of the former Farcroft care home site in Wellington.

The local authority, which owns the North Road site, has completed a business case proposing the development of a purpose-built extra care scheme designed to support older residents living with dementia across the borough. The project is subject to planning approval.

It will deliver self-contained accommodation alongside round-the-clock care provision and shared communal facilities.

The redevelopment aligns with the historic use of the Farcroft site, which previously provided residential care services for older people, including those with dementia, prior to its closure.

Following that closure, the Council worked closely with former operators to ensure residents and families were supported in securing appropriate alternative accommodation. The site was subsequently acquired by the Council to safeguard its long-term value to the community.

Existing vacant buildings on the site are now scheduled for demolition as the first phase of regeneration.

Their condition and susceptibility to anti-social behaviour have reinforced the case for comprehensive redevelopment rather than refurbishment.

While refurbishment options were assessed, the Council concluded that adapting the legacy structures to meet modern accessibility, compliance, and care standards would be neither cost-effective nor future-proof when compared with a new-build solution.

Councillor Paul Watling, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health Systems said: “I’m delighted that the Council is planning to invest in redeveloping this important site in Wellington which will create a new high quality facility, enabling local people who have lived in the area all their life to remain living well in the heart of the community.

“It also addresses a shortage of dementia care facilities that we have in the Borough. We have been working closely with local Councillors Paul Davis and Graham Cook and we want to reassure residents that we are fully committed to bringing this site back into use as part of our commitment to create a better Borough and we look forward to sharing further details in due course.”
