Work has resumed on a long-delayed social housing development in Walsall following a \u00a31m funding boost from regional regeneration budgets overseen by Richard Parker.<\/p>\n
Located on the former Hollyhedge Lane scrap yard site, the scheme had been stalled for more than 18 months after the original contractor encountered financial difficulties and entered administration.<\/p>\n
The site owner and long-term investor whg has now appointed national housebuilder Lovell Partnerships to complete the project, supported by funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority and Homes England.<\/p>\n
Once complete, the development will deliver 71 social rent homes, all owned and managed by whg, contributing to efforts to address growing demand for affordable housing in the borough.<\/p>\n
Construction is expected to finish by spring 2027, although two partially built apartment blocks will need to be demolished and rebuilt as part of the restart.<\/p>\n
The Mayor has made the delivery of social rent housing a central pillar of his regional housing strategy, with an ambition to see 2,000 new social rent homes built annually across the West Midlands by 2028.<\/p>\n
Parker said: \u201cBeing unable to afford a safe, secure home blights lives and prevents people from achieving their full potential. So, schemes like this one, that provide more social rent housing, are critical to getting people out of temporary accommodation and off waiting lists. I\u2019ve made the construction of more social rent housing a top priority because I\u2019ve seen first-hand how it can change lives for the better by providing the springboard families need to get on in life.\u201d<\/p>\n
