Engineers have completed the final stage of piling at Birmingham\u2019s new Curzon Street station, laying the groundwork for the city-centre terminus that will serve HS2 trains.<\/p>\n
More than 2,000 reinforced concrete piles have now been installed, forming the foundations for the station and associated public spaces.<\/p>\n
Stretching over 400 metres between Moor Street station and Millennium Point, Curzon Street will feature seven platforms beneath a sweeping arched roof, inspired by Victorian railway architecture.<\/p>\n
The station will also include a tree-lined promenade, paved station square, and landscaped terraces, along with improved cycling and pedestrian access and connections to the West Midlands Metro.<\/p>\n
Alistair Morgan, HS2\u2019s senior project manager said: \u201cOnce complete, Curzon Street will be a new landmark for Birmingham \u2013 and provide a fitting city centre terminus for a railway that will improve journeys and free up space on the existing West Coast Main Line. These new images also show how it will be integrated into the rest of the city \u2013 with new green spaces, better accessibility and onward public transport links. It\u2019s great to see how much progress has been made on the foundation works and I\u2019d like to thank everyone who\u2019s been working so hard to get the job done. But we\u2019ve still got a lot of work to do before the first passengers arrive, and I look forward to seeing more significant progress in the year ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
The piling work, which began in September 2024, was delivered by HS2\u2019s construction partner Mace Dragados joint venture (MDJV), working with Keltbray.<\/p>\n
The operation also involved constructing an 8-metre-high retaining wall and excavating 47,000 cubic metres of material to create a level base for the station.<\/p>\n
Rodger Storey, MDJV\u2019s senior project manager said: \u201cCompleting the foundation works for Curzon Street station marks a major milestone in the delivery of the project. The team is proud of the major achievement represented by the extensive piling operation that forms the station\u2019s foundations. With this crucial phase now finished, we look forward to progressing the construction of the station building itself, which will create further jobs, apprenticeships, and supply chain opportunities as activity on site continues to ramp up.\u201d<\/p>\n
The main focus now turns to the Digbeth extension of the West Midlands Metro, which will stop beneath the station on New Canal Street, and the remaining sub-surface foundation works.<\/p>\n
So far, more than 7,000 tonnes of reinforcement steel and 29,000 cubic metres of concrete have been poured, with the full sub-surface structure expected to use 19,000 tonnes of reinforced steel and 69,000 cubic metres of concrete.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere on site, work continues on the temporary office block that will manage the next stages of construction. At peak activity, more than 1,000 people will be employed directly on the project or through MDJV\u2019s UK supply chain.<\/p>\n
Progress is also ongoing on the viaducts carrying HS2 services into Birmingham, with the 40-metre-high Curzon 2 viaduct – the tallest on the project – due to be slid into place across the Cross City line this summer. These structures are being built by Balfour Beatty VINCI.<\/p>\n
HS2 overall supports more than 33,000 jobs across the UK, recently marking the appointment of its 2,000th apprentice, a 19-year-old from Bordesley Green in Birmingham.<\/p>\n
Despite the milestone at Curzon Street, HS2 Ltd Chief Executive Mark Wild is leading a comprehensive reset to ensure delivery of the remaining 140 miles between London and Birmingham is achieved efficiently and cost-effectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
