Birmingham is promoting a major city centre regeneration opportunity to international investors, with plans for thousands of homes, new jobs and significant commercial development.<\/p>\n
A new Birmingham Central Heart Prospectus outlines proposals to transform around four hectares of under-used retail and office space into a mixed-use neighbourhood linking key parts of the city centre.<\/p>\n
The scheme could deliver more than 5,000 homes, up to 8,000 jobs,\u00a0 over\u00a04.3 million sq ft of commercial floorspace and more than seven hectares of public space, alongside improved transport connections and new green routes.<\/p>\n
The Central Heart area is positioned between HS2 Curzon Street railway station, the Bullring & Grand Central, Birmingham New Street railway station and the Colmore Business District.<\/p>\n
City leaders say the development could become a major gateway connecting the HS2 station with the wider city centre while creating new public spaces and improving walking and cycling routes.<\/p>\n
The city council said attracting private sector investment will be key to delivering the scheme, which aims to support new housing, create jobs and strengthen the city centre economy.<\/p>\n
Plans include converting outdated or empty buildings into homes and workplaces, as well as expanding green space and improving public areas across the district.<\/p>\n
Councillor Sharon Thompson, deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills, said: \u201cResidents rightly expect us to focus on delivering better housing, safer streets and more secure, better paid jobs. Securing responsible investment into Birmingham Central Heart is one of the most effective ways we can deliver those priorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur aim is to turn empty or outdated buildings into new homes, workplaces and green spaces that serve our communities. We are clear that this is about inclusive, sustainable growth and working with our Mayoral Development Corporation, Business Improvement Districts, landowners, communities and public sector partners so that regeneration raises standards, protects our heritage and delivers real social value for Birmingham people.\u201d<\/p>\n
The proposals form part of the wider Central Heart Growth Zone identified in the city\u2019s emerging local plan and are aligned with the Central Birmingham Framework 2045, which sets out long-term ambitions for housing, jobs and green infrastructure in the city centre.<\/p>\n
The plans are also linked to the proposed Birmingham East Mayoral Development Corporation, expected to be established by 2027 to help accelerate regeneration and coordinate infrastructure investment across east Birmingham and North Solihull.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy focus is not on grand visions that sit on paper, it\u2019s on delivering prosperity that reaches all communities. That\u2019s more homes, better-paid jobs, and the right infrastructure to give everyone the best opportunity to get on in life.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe already have the confidence of the private sector with billions of pounds of investment coming into the Sports Quarter and Birmingham Knowledge Quarter, and we\u2019ll go even further with Central Heart Birmingham as part of the HS2-led regeneration of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
Urban design and planning firm Gensler has supported the project\u2019s design work, while property development consultancy Sphere Group has also backed the initiative.<\/p>\n
The prospectus identifies eight key development sites across the city\u2019s retail core, including Cherry Street, Martineau Galleries, Martineau Place and Union Street, where a mix of residential, commercial and public realm improvements are planned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
