These included external and cavity wall insulation, new double glazing, replacement external doors, increased loft insulation, improved ventilation systems and roof replacements.

The programme was supported by more than £5m in funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero through the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (Wave 2.2).

Delivery of the project was managed on behalf of City of Wolverhampton Council by Wolverhampton Homes following consultation with residents.

One resident, Mandy Pitt of Hatherton Gardens in Bushbury, said: “Overall we’re really happy with the outcome. Our home is definitely warmer in the winter because the winter before was freezing.

“Our energy bills are a lot better – we’re not putting as much on the gas to warm the house up. The heat remains in the property a lot better than it did beforehand, so we’re really pleased with that.”

Steve Evans, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for City Housing at the council, said: “These retrofit works have improved the homes of our tenants, making them warmer and healthier, and saving them money. With the current high cost of energy, it is especially important we improve the energy efficiency of any poorly performing council-owned housing and that is why the council committed to this investment programme.

“Our priority is to make the best use of our assets and ensure high standards across all areas of council housing, and this demonstrates the council’s commitment to ensuring every resident has a safe and affordable home.”

An energy efficiency programme funded partly by government
