{"id":2109561,"date":"2026-03-16T12:02:40","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T12:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2109561-midlands-council-to-boost-defence-and-security-sector-growth"},"modified":"2026-03-16T12:42:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T12:42:06","slug":"midlands-council-to-boost-defence-and-security-sector-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2109561-midlands-council-to-boost-defence-and-security-sector-growth","title":{"rendered":"Midlands council to boost defence and security sector growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Midlands business leaders have been appointed to a new Midlands Defence and Security Industry Council, aimed at driving growth and investment in the region\u2019s defence sector.<\/p>\n<p>The council brings together senior representatives from some of the Midlands\u2019 largest employers, alongside SMEs, to collectively champion the region\u2019s defence and security capabilities and advocate for the sector\u2019s economic potential.<\/p>\n<p>Its members will work to create jobs and expand opportunities for graduates and apprentices.<\/p>\n<p>The first council meeting will be hosted later this month by Midlands Mayors Claire Ward (East Midlands) and Richard Parker (West Midlands), alongside the industry chair Chris Spicer, managing director of engineering &amp; systems integration at Babcock International.<\/p>\n<p>Spicer said: \u201cI am delighted to accept the role of inaugural chair of the Midlands Defence and Security Industry Council. Babcock has a long-standing relationship with the Midlands, where we have been an employer for more than 100 years in vehicle conversions. I am immensely proud of our highly skilled workforce in Walsall, who continue to deliver and develop vehicles such as our Civilian Armoured Vehicle and General Logistics Vehicle variants \u2013 capabilities that are vital to the UK\u2019s national security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis collaborative venture, underpinned by the recently launched Defence and Security Blueprint for the Midlands, is excellent news for the region. It not only supports the Government\u2019s wider Defence Industrial Strategy, but also reinforces Babcock\u2019s ongoing commitment to creating employment opportunities and driving growth across the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands said: \u201cThe East Midlands has substantial strengths in defence and the sectors that support it, but we know that even greater strength and opportunity is generated by the wider Midlands working together. Our supply chains do not stop at administrative boundaries, so we have built a partnership that understands and responds to that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will allow for stronger, inclusive growth. Businesses expect us to ensure that the benefits of increased defence investment accrue to our major global businesses and SMEs alike, and this Council will ensure that we work together to deliver that. It is this shared work that will translate into well-paid jobs for local people whilst opening up new opportunities for graduates and apprentices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3559\" data-end=\"3946\">The council has been formed under the Midlands Defence and Security Blueprint, a plan designed to secure the Midlands\u2019 position as a centre of excellence in the UK\u2019s defence industry. The sector already supports around 50,000 employees across 1,000 companies, and the council aims to upskill workers, develop new career pathways, and help more SMEs access government
