A £280,000 refurbishment is underway at The Courthouse on North Street in Rugby, ahead of its planned reopening in mid-May.

Heineken-owned Star Pubs is delivering the project in partnership with new operator Hari Shankarkrishnamurthy, who also runs The George at Kilsby and the Old Lion at Harborough Magna.

The investment will create 20 jobs and aims to transform the former pub into a contemporary venue offering a mix of traditional pub classics and pan-Asian-inspired dishes, alongside live music, DJs, and family- and dog-friendly facilities.

The renovation includes a full exterior refresh with new signage, lighting, and a redecorated façade. The rear garden, one of the largest in Rugby, will feature upgraded seating, parasols, festoon lighting, covered areas for year-round use, and an outdoor screen timed for the World Cup.

Inside, the venue will be updated with a modern urban design, including stylish furniture, exposed brickwork, herringbone flooring, a lounge and dining area, and a spacious bar.

A large screen will support live sports coverage, while a new DJ booth, professional lighting, and dance floor will target the local nightlife market on Thursday through Saturday evenings.

On the food and beverage front, The Courthouse will offer freshly prepared dishes spanning breakfasts, pub classics like burgers and fish & chips, and international cuisine such as curries, tacos, and pasta. The drinks menu will feature coffee, premium lagers, wines, cocktails, and upgraded cellar equipment for consistent draft quality.

Hari Shankarkrishnamurthy said: “The Courthouse has lots of potential but is crying out for investment and TLC to help it thrive for the long term. Our aim is to develop a bar that’s like no other in Rugby and give residents a fantastic place to go on their doorsteps without the need to travel to cities like Birmingham and Leicester. The cost-of-living crisis is hitting people’s wallets, so whilst everything will be good quality, prices will be reasonable.”

Jean-Paul Russek, Star Pubs’ area manager for Rugby said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Hari to give The Courthouse a fresh lease of life and safeguard it for the future – it’ll be unrecognisable. Hari has a track record of turning round local pubs. His plans are incredibly exciting. They’ll provide lots of reasons to visit and make The Courthouse stand out, attracting customers from across Rugby and the wider region.”
