Newport Community Library is set for a refurbishment after nearly £236,000 of external funding was secured for improvement works.

A grant of £235,971 has been awarded through the Libraries Improvement Fund, backed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England.

The successful bid was developed jointly by Newport Town Council and Telford & Wrekin Council, with Newport Town Council leading delivery of the project and providing additional local funding.

The investment will fund upgrades to key public areas of the library, including the main library space, children’s section and meeting room.

Planned works include replacement doors and windows, new ceiling tiles, improved lighting and shelving, plus full redecoration throughout the building.

Temporary closures may be required during parts of the programme, although alternative arrangements are expected to minimise disruption.

Newport Community Library is operated by Newport Town Council as part of the wider Telford & Wrekin library service partnership, giving residents access to shared stock, digital resources and systems.

The facility remains a heavily used local asset, with more than 1,500 regular users and over 31,000 books loaned in the last year.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education, Employment and Skills said: “We’re pleased to have worked in close partnership with Newport Town Council to secure this important funding for Newport Community Library.
