A Worcestershire company has been fined \u00a330,000 after an employee suffered life-changing injuries in a workplace transport incident involving a forklift truck and falling concrete blocks.<\/p>\n
BA Mobile Fleet Services, based in Redditch, admitted safety breaches following the incident at its site on 14 December 2023.<\/p>\n
The 35-year-old employee, a father of two, was inside an HGV box trailer while it was being loaded with one-tonne concrete blocks ahead of a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency brake test.<\/p>\n
He was working inside the trailer with a colleague while a third employee operated a forklift truck. During the loading process, the forklift nudged a stack of blocks, causing them to topple onto the worker\u2019s legs.<\/p>\n
His injuries were so severe that his left foot and lower leg were later amputated. He also sustained serious injuries to his right leg.<\/p>\n
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found the business had failed to properly separate workers from moving vehicles on site. It also found the forklift driver had not been trained or authorised to operate the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The company pleaded guilty at Kidderminster Magistrates\u2019 Court and was also ordered to pay \u00a34,325 in costs.<\/p>\n
HSE inspector Emma Page said: \u201cThe injuries sustained here by this young man have been truly life-changing. Too many people are injured or killed every year in workplace transport-related incidents.<\/p>\n
