Midlands-based commercial design, build and fit-out contractor, McCarthys has strengthened its team with two key appointments.

The business, headquartered in Coventry with an office in Birmingham, has appointed a new quantity surveyor and senior site manager.

Javed Haidary joins McCarthys as quantity surveyor to support the commercial delivery of projects across the business’ growing portfolio. He brings a strong track record across the West Midlands construction sector.

Oliver Mills also joins the team. Appointed as senior site manager, Mills has over 16 years of experience delivering residential, commercial and mixed use developments ranging from £2m to £12m+.

The appointments mark the latest investment in the team, following a 30 per cent increase in permanent employee headcount over the last two years.

They also come after the recent launch of McCarthys’ refreshed business strategy. Designed to deliver a more targeted, client-focused service, the approach is structured in line with six key markets: offices, education, healthcare, industrial and leisure, and bespoke projects.

Steve McCarthy, managing director of McCarthys said: “It’s a pleasure to welcome Javed and Oliver to the team at such an exciting time for the business. As we broaden our service offering and embed our new strategy, Javed and Oliver will play a key part in delivering on our vision. We look forward to them being with us through the next phase of McCarthys.”

Specialist urban design practice edgeUD has appointed Barry Gaffney as director to support its growing pipeline of regeneration and strategic masterplanning work across the Midlands.

Gaffney joins edge with more than 19 years of experience spanning both planning and urban design. His dual-discipline perspective aligns with the practice’s approach to shaping places around how they are experienced, not just how they are built.

""

Barry Gaffney

In his previous role at Savills, where he spent almost ten years, Gaffney played a key role in establishing and growing the firm’s Midlands urban design capability.

During his time there he worked across the UK and Ireland, leading and contributing to a

wide range of complex regeneration and development projects, many of which are of regional and national significance – such as Langley SUE in Sutton Coldfield and the Leopardstown Campus in Dublin.

Since opening the Birmingham studio last year, edge has expanded its client base rapidly delivering a wide range of strategic projects in Solihull, the West Midlands, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Leicestershire.

Barry Gaffney said: “Successful places are ones that genuinely reflect how people actually live, work and connect. What drew me to edge is its focus on the human experience of place, looking beyond red lines and technical parameters to understand what will make somewhere not just work but become special over time. That’s particularly relevant in the Midlands, where there’s a real opportunity to rethink how our villages, towns, city centres evolve – so to best serve the people within.”

At edge, Gaffney will support projects across the region, bringing expertise in masterplanning, development strategy and design-led regeneration. His experience spans residential, employment, retail and mixed-use schemes, with a particular focus on urban renewal and town centre transformation.

Sarah Murray, director and co-Founder of edge said: “Barry brings a hugely valuable combination of planning and urban design expertise, alongside a strong track record in delivering complex regeneration projects. As we continue to grow our presence in the Midlands, his experience will be invaluable in helping clients unlock sites and develop projects that are both meaningful and

deliverable.

“Barry’s appointment supports our commitment to helping to shape places that work for existing communities as well as new ones across the Midlands.”

RSM UK has announced four new partners in Birmingham as a key part of its bid to drive organic growth and ensure the continued momentum of its corporate strategy.

The newly promoted partners include Daniel Haden in audit, Jon Bennett in risk assurance and Louise Rudd in finance function support.

The Birmingham office has also recently appointed restructuring expert Joe Barry as partner to lead the firm’s restructuring advisory team in the region.

Haden joined RSM as a senior manager and has progressed quickly through the ranks to audit partner.

He works with a range of organisations, from fast-growing entrepreneurial and private equity-backed businesses to larger, complex listed and international groups, delivering high-quality audits and providing tailored advice and insight to clients.""

Bennett is an internal audit and risk management specialist, leading RSM’s financial services team in the Midlands and South West.

He has also recently taken on the role as head of insurance for the UK. He’s an expert in helping firms improve their risk management, working with banks, insurers, consultancy firms, and brokers and traders of all sizes, from owner-managed businesses to FTSE 250 companies.

Rudd has extensive experience in accounting and financial reporting, supporting businesses through audit readiness, optimising finance functions, technical accounting, problem-solving and change. She advises businesses across every size and sector, with a particular focus on large corporates and private equity-backed businesses.

Helen Brocklebank, regional managing partner in the Midlands at RSM UK said: “I’d like to congratulate our new partners as they embark on the next chapter of their careers here at RSM. The promotions are hugely well deserved and demonstrate our recognition of their exceptional talents as experts in their respective fields, and our commitment to the Midlands market. Not only are we determined to invest in people from within our own ranks, but we recognise the value in drawing upon external expertise, to help drive growth.

“Daniel, Jon, Louise and Joe each bring a unique skillset to the firm. Our investment in their experience, expertise and knowledge will support the growth-areas of this business. These talented individuals will help drive how our clients evolve, grow and succeed in a constantly changing business environment. It’s an exciting year ahead for RSM, and I look forward to working more closely with our new partners to achieve the best outcomes for our people, clients and the business, and to help shape the long-term future for our firm.”
