Specsavers has launched a £7m expansion of its Vision Labs manufacturing site in Kidderminster, aiming to increase lens production capacity by 22% and introduce new automated technology.

The investment will expand two existing buildings at the site, increasing the overall footprint from 68,056 sq ft to 81,168 sq ft.

Once complete, weekly lens production is expected to rise by 22%, growing from 139,000 to 169,000 units.

Vision Labs is one of three Specsavers manufacturing and distribution facilities in Kidderminster and supplies more than 900 UK stores.

The project was formally announced during a ceremony attended by Deputy Mayor of Kidderminster, Councillor Shazu Miah.

As part of the expansion, new production systems will streamline elements of the manufacturing process, improving efficiency and increasing output capacity within the enlarged facility.

The introduction of advanced automation will also support workforce upskilling as operations evolve.

The company said the investment would also deliver environmental benefits through reduced energy consumption, lower water usage and a smaller overall carbon footprint.

Shafi Ahmed, head of operations at Vision Labs said: “This expansion is a direct result of growing demand for Specsavers’ services in the UK. With bigger sites and better technology, we are strongly positioned to continue to deliver quality eye care to communities across the UK.”
