Music streaming promised unlimited access to millions of songs, e-books could store entire libraries on a single device, and cloud technology meant we no longer needed to own anything at all.

Yet something unexpected has happened.

The generation that has grown up entirely in the digital age is increasingly turning back to physical media. From independent record shops to high street book retailers, Gen Z is helping to drive demand for vinyl records and printed books in a trend that is reshaping parts of the creative industries.

According to the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), vinyl sales have now grown for 18 consecutive years in the UK, while physical music revenue rose by almost 20% during 2025.

Six of the ten best-selling vinyl albums last year were new releases, highlighting that younger audiences – rather than purely nostalgic older listeners – are driving much of the demand.

The publishing industry is experiencing a similar picture. The Publishers Association reported that UK publishing reached record revenues in 2025, with print books continuing to account for almost 80% of consumer publishing revenue despite the continued growth of audiobooks and digital reading. Fiction and children’s books remain particularly strong performers.

For many Gen Z consumers, the attraction has little to do with nostalgia.

“I’ve got a vinyl record at home,” I often tell people. “So does my dad, who’s 67. The interesting thing is that we both own exactly the same format, but for completely different reasons. He bought records because that’s all there was. I bought one because I wanted something I could actually own.”

That distinction says a lot about why physical media is making a comeback.

For previous generations, vinyl records and printed books were everyday objects. Today, they’re deliberate purchases. Streaming remains the easiest way to discover new music, while digital readers and smartphones offer instant access to books wherever you are. But convenience is no longer the only thing consumers value.

Instead, younger buyers are placing greater emphasis on ownership. A streamed album can disappear from a platform overnight because of licensing agreements. Digital purchases often exist only within ecosystems controlled by technology companies.

A vinyl record or hardback book belongs entirely to its owner. That sense of permanence appears to be becoming increasingly valuable.

The BPI’s recent study into the music habits of 18 to 25-year-olds found that younger consumers are looking for deeper connections with music and artists rather than simply passive listening. The research suggests Gen Z increasingly values community, identity and meaningful engagement alongside digital convenience.

Industry observers are noticing the same trend.

Neil Gibbons, chief operating officer at Key Production Group, the UK’s largest physical music manufacturing agency, believes the audience for vinyl has fundamentally changed.

“We have been watching this consistent growth in demand for vinyl for a long time. The core audience has shifted even beyond Gen Z now as fans build deeper connections with artists by listening to whole albums and collecting multiple formats.”

Listening habits have changed alongside buying habits. Rather than replacing streaming, vinyl has become something different entirely.

Streaming offers convenience for everyday listening. Vinyl offers an experience. Putting a record on requires intention. Albums are played from beginning to end. Cover artwork is admired, lyrics are read and music becomes something people actively engage with rather than simply consume in the background.

Books offer something similar. Although audiobooks continue to grow rapidly, printed books remain the dominant format in consumer publishing. Beautifully designed special editions, sprayed edges and collector’s versions have become increasingly popular, helped by online communities such as BookTok.

What was once simply a book is now also an object people proudly display on shelves.

Social media may seem an unlikely driver of physical products, yet platforms like TikTok have introduced millions of younger readers to literature through recommendations, reviews and beautifully presented book collections.

The same applies to music.

Artists increasingly release multiple vinyl editions with different colours, artwork and exclusive content because younger fans see records as collectable pieces rather than just audio formats.

Research also suggests that buying physical media satisfies something digital cannot.

Technology writer Romain Boudruche, co-founder of cassette player manufacturer We Are Rewind, recently argued that younger consumers are seeking “more meaningful connections with music”, adding that physical and digital formats are now complementing rather than replacing one another.

This hybrid approach reflects how Gen Z consumes almost everything.

Music is streamed daily, but favourite albums are bought on vinyl. Books might be sampled digitally before a printed copy earns a permanent place on a shelf.

Convenience and ownership now coexist.

The wider business implications are significant. Independent bookshops and record stores are benefiting from renewed interest in physical browsing. Premium publishers are investing heavily in collector’s editions. Record pressing plants continue expanding capacity to meet demand after years of decline.

Physical products have become premium products. Consumers are often willing to spend considerably more on something they can hold, display and revisit for years to come.

In many ways, physical media has become a form of self-expression.

Bookshelves appear regularly in social media backgrounds. Vinyl collections become part of home décor. The objects themselves tell people something about their owners.

That represents a shift from previous generations. For parents and grandparents, books and records accumulated naturally over decades.

Today’s collections are often carefully curated. Perhaps that’s why this trend feels less like a revival and more like a reinvention.

The formats are old, but the motivations are entirely new.

The digital revolution promised that ownership would become irrelevant. Instead, it may have made ownership more desirable than ever.

As streaming services continue to dominate entertainment, physical books and vinyl records appear to have found a new role—not as replacements for digital technology, but as something digital can never fully replicate.

In an age where almost everything exists on a screen, holding something real has become a luxury.

And for the first generation raised entirely online, that may be exactly the point.

Forget endless scrolling – the
