GPTZero found no public evidence any of those partnerships existed.

“No human is going to cite the same fact three times in two pages using three different sources,” says GPTZero researcher Paul Esau, describing the pattern as chaotic signposting, a structural tell of AI-generated research rather than a one-off mistake.

PwC is the fourth, not the first

PwC isn’t even the interesting part of this story. It’s the fourth Big Four firm caught doing exactly this within a year. KPMG’s October 2025 report on agentic AI had 40 of its 45 sources hallucinated, according to GPTZero, with half its factual claims either false or misattributed, including a “2019 East Japan press release” cited as evidence for a technology that only entered public discourse in 2024.

EY Canada’s cybersecurity report was assessed as 72% AI-generated, with 16 of its 27 citations, several supposedly from Forbes and McKinsey, either broken links or entirely invented. Deloitte issued a partial refund to the Australian government after a 237-page report it had been paid roughly $440,000 for turned out to contain fabricated legal references and a made-up quote attributed to a Federal Court judgment.

Four of the world’s biggest, most trusted professional services brands sell analytical rigour as their entire product. All four have now been caught letting AI do the homework instead. PwC and KPMG each issued near-identical statements about taking accuracy seriously. Neither explained how the errors made it past review.

The irony is hard to miss

These aren’t just any four firms. Since 2023, the Big Four have collectively poured more than $10bn into AI, racing to position themselves as the people businesses call when they need to make sense of it.

PwC alone committed $1bn to generative AI, became OpenAI’s largest enterprise customer, and struck a deal to resell ChatGPT Enterprise to its own clients. This is the industry that gets paid to tell everyone else how to use AI responsibly.

It’s also, by PwC’s own research, an industry whose advice isn’t landing especially well. The firm’s most recent Global CEO Survey found just 12% of chief executives say AI has delivered both cost and revenue benefits, while 56% say they’re getting nothing measurable out of it at all. A sector this uncertain about AI’s real value let it write the reports meant to prove otherwise anyway.

Why it matters beyond one bad report

If “AI slop” still sounds to you like a problem for spammy content farms and cheap Instagram ads, this should change that. It’s turning up inside the material companies produce specifically to demonstrate expertise. There’s a second problem hiding behind the first: AI tools are trained partly on trusted-looking sources, including reports published by household-name firms.

A fabricated claim that starts life inside a Big Four PDF doesn’t stay there. It gets scraped, cited elsewhere, and recycled by other AI systems as settled fact, with no clean way to pull it back once it’s loose.

Customers are already losing patience

The timing is bad for anyone hoping this blows over quietly. DoubleVerify’s 2026 Global Insights report found 48% of UK consumers say they’d think less of a brand whose advertising appeared next to low-quality AI-generated content, the highest figure recorded anywhere in the EMEA region.

A separate DoubleVerify study with YouGov found 92% of UK consumers say AI-generated content is making it harder to trust information online full stop, with 81% specifically worried about encountering fake content designed to look real. “AI slop isn’t just a threat to media quality, it’s a threat to brand equity,” says Stuart Flint, DoubleVerify’s EMEA managing director.

Fashion brand Guess found that out the expensive way earlier this year, running an AI-generated model in a Vogue advert to a reception that landed somewhere between confused and cold.

The direction of travel is worse, not better

Forrester’s 2026 predictions for B2C marketing expect a third of brands to actively damage their own customer experience this year through cost-cutting AI self-service deployed in situations it isn’t ready for. The same forecast expects a 20% surge in AI-related consumer class-action lawsuits.

A few platforms are already treating this as a live threat. Pinterest now labels AI-generated images. Spotify has stripped out millions of bot-generated tracks using spam-detection tools. YouTube’s chief executive Neal Mohan has publicly named managing AI slop a top priority for the platform this year.

Used properly, with real human oversight, generative AI remains a useful productivity tool. The Big Four pattern shows the risk isn’t confined to cheap, disposable content, it can sit inside the material a serious firm puts its name to, and readers are starting to notice.

Every business weighing up how far to lean into AI content to cut costs is running a trade: a saving on the input side, against a rising cost on the trust side. PwC just found out what happens when the trade goes wrong in public.

AI slop just cost the Big Four their credibility on the one thing they sell: trust.
