{"id":2116080,"date":"2026-08-25T07:20:44","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T06:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/?p=2116080"},"modified":"2026-08-25T07:21:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T06:21:21","slug":"poundland-loss-doubles-to-85m-ahead-of-looming-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2116080-poundland-loss-doubles-to-85m-ahead-of-looming-sale","title":{"rendered":"Poundland loss doubles to \u00a385m ahead of looming sale"},"content":{"rendered":"<div role=\"feed\" aria-label=\"Chat messages\" aria-describedby=\"_r_7s_\">\n<div>\n<div role=\"article\" aria-label=\"Message 778 of 778\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Poundland&#8217;s pre-tax loss nearly doubled to \u00a385.2m in the year to September 2025, up from \u00a345.4m the previous year, according to newly filed accounts that also revealed the discounter had overstated its revenue by around \u00a361m in the prior financial year due to an accounting error.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The error, which had no impact on reported profit, stemmed from sales between Poundland&#8217;s UK business and its operations in the Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man being incorrectly recorded as external revenue.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The review also identified around \u00a317m of equipment that could not be verified and errors relating to lease liabilities that reduced net assets by \u00a332.5m.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Group sales fell 12% to around \u00a31.5bn-\u00a31.6bn in the year to September 2025, with gross margin narrowing to 31.4%. Poundland&#8217;s directors attributed the widening loss to difficult trading conditions and a significant restructuring programme, describing 2025 as a &#8220;reset moment&#8221; that produced a challenging set of statutory results but positioned the business for its turnaround.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The retailer cut its store portfolio by 22% over the period, from 820 sites to 642 by January 2026, while average headcount fell 11% to 14,417, with most job losses concentrated in stores and distribution rather than head office.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The restructuring plan was sanctioned by the High Court in August 2025, with former owner Pepco Group providing an overdraft facility of up to \u00a330m and retaining a minority stake in the business.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The results come as Gordon Brothers, which bought the Walsall-based retailer from Pepco for a nominal \u00a31 in July 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2115891-poundlands-owner-brings-in-advisers-ahead-of-sale\">presses ahead with a sale of the business<\/a>, having appointed advisers to run an auction expected to launch in the autumn.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said: &#8220;Re-building trust with customers takes time, but we&#8217;re making very significant progress as we deliver the ranges and price simplicity they demand of us.&#8221; The retailer will open its first new store in two years this week, in West Thurrock, Essex.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A Poundland spokesperson said the filing reflected a historic period that ended in September 2025, and that the business had made &#8220;very significant progress&#8221; since then under
