University College Birmingham (UCB) is to open a 60-cover restaurant called Brocks on Harborne High Street later this year, in the former Harborne Kitchen site.<\/p>\n

The restaurant is the latest venue in UCB’s \u00a315m investment and acquisition programme, which began in July with the acquisition of the former Cube Hotel and Marco Pierre White restaurant<\/a>. The programme is expected to create more than 150 jobs across its venues.<\/p>\n

Brocks will have an open kitchen and bar, booths and high-top seating, and a private dining room upstairs for feasting menus. The seasonal menu will cover small plates, mains and sharing dishes, alongside a wine and cocktail list. It opens on Wednesday evenings for dinner, serves lunch and dinner from Thursday to Saturday, and is open for lunch only on Sundays.<\/p>\n

It is named after Richard Brocklesby, who was a chef lecturer at UCB from 1982 until he retired in 2024. UCB says he taught chefs including Brad Carter, Liam Dillon and TV chef Poppy O’Toole. His specialism in butchery fits the building’s history as the former Walter Smiths Fine Foods butchers.<\/p>\n

UCB alumnus Matt Nicholls<\/a> is head chef. He won the British Culinary Federation’s Young Chef of the Year in 2018 and Competition Chef of the Year in 2022, and previously worked at Simpsons in Edgbaston and as head chef at Cheal’s in Knowle. Liam Roe is general manager, and UCB College of Food students will work across the kitchen, bar and front of house.<\/p>\n

David Cumberlidge, UCB’s commercial director, said: “We’re immensely proud to have our alumni, such as Matt Nicholls, return to University College Birmingham armed with the expertise they’ve developed since graduation to inspire the next generation of chefs and students from the wider university programmes.”<\/p>\n

Brocklesby said he was “shocked but incredibly honoured and humbled” to have the restaurant named after him.<\/p>\n

The programme also includes Beyond, an 80-cover caf\u00e9, restaurant and bar<\/a> opening at the Summer Row campus late this autumn, the refurbished Restaurant at College of Food, which reopens on 12 October, and the Cube hotel and restaurant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
