{"id":2118283,"date":"2026-10-15T17:06:41","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T16:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/?p=2118283"},"modified":"2026-10-15T17:06:41","modified_gmt":"2026-10-15T16:06:41","slug":"birmingham-manufacturer-wins-200000-grant-to-break-into-electric-vehicle-motors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2118283-birmingham-manufacturer-wins-200000-grant-to-break-into-electric-vehicle-motors","title":{"rendered":"Birmingham manufacturer wins \u00a3200,000 grant to break into electric vehicle motors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Birmingham manufacturer Brandauer has been awarded a \u00a3199,500 grant to develop a new process for making a key component used in electric vehicle motors.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brandauer.co.uk\/\">The precision metal stamping and tooling specialist<\/a> will use the funding from the West Midlands Supply Chain Transition Programme to improve how it manufactures lamination stacks, the layers of ultra-thin electrical steel that form the magnetic core of an electric motor.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Each stack is made up of more than 3,000 individual laminations, and their precision directly affects how well a motor performs, how efficiently it uses energy and how reliable it is.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Brandauer chief executive and co-owner Rowan Crozier said its current process suffers from inconsistency, which means too many parts are scrapped and faults are often caught too late. That has made it harder to compete for large, high-volume contracts from major vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 12-month project, delivered in partnership with WMG at the University of Warwick, will finish in May 2027.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Crozier said: \u201cThe real winning formula for this project was the combination of Brandauer\u2019s expertise in precision engineering with WMG\u2019s amazing access to deep research.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cThe result will be a repeatable and scalable approach to bonded motor lamination stacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He added that the investment had given the UK \u201ca crucial sovereign capability\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The business, which has historically relied heavily on the automotive sector, has already been expanding into aerospace and defence, including drone technology, and has won new orders in those markets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Andy Davis, project lead for the Supply Chain Transition Programme, said: \u201cGetting the lamination stack process right will let Brandauer compete for contracts with major vehicle manufacturers that would otherwise be out of reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The programme, funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/?s=WMCA\">WMCA<\/a> through its Investment Zone, helps small and medium-sized manufacturers diversify into new, high-growth markets through coaching, training and research and development grants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Birmingham manufacturer
