Birmingham Airport has recorded its busiest September, with 1,386,372 passengers passing through its terminal, up 2.9% on the same month last year.<\/p>\n

Low-cost flights were the main driver of growth, with passenger numbers on low-cost airlines up 11.4% year on year. It follows a record August<\/a>, when more than 1.57 million passengers passed through the terminal.<\/p>\n

The most popular destinations for the month were Dublin, Palma, Alicante, Amsterdam and Malaga.<\/p>\n

Matt Hazelwood, chief commercial officer of Birmingham Airport, said: \u201cThe high passenger performance of September is particularly encouraging as we come to the end of our busy summer season with additional growth achieved year-on-year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe continued growth comes just as we begin to kick off our winter flight programmes.\u201d<\/p>\n

New winter routes include Reykjavik, Gdansk, Cairo, Rovaniemi, Frankfurt and Copenhagen.<\/p>\n

The figures come a week after the airport unveiled a \u00a32bn draft masterplan<\/a> that could take it close to 30m passengers a year and create more than 50,000 jobs. An eight-week public consultation on the plans begins today, with 20 events planned.<\/p>\n

Last month, the airport also won the Community Builder and Sustainability Trailblazer titles at the Solihull Chamber Awards, recognising progress towards its target of becoming a net zero operation by 2033.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
