{"id":2118941,"date":"2026-11-03T07:23:01","date_gmt":"2026-11-03T07:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/?p=2118941"},"modified":"2026-11-03T09:10:56","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T09:10:56","slug":"poundland-owner-believes-break-up-will-make-more-money-than-rescue-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2118941-poundland-owner-believes-break-up-will-make-more-money-than-rescue-bid","title":{"rendered":"Clock ticks on Poundland as owner thought to eye bigger payday from break-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Poundland\u2019s US owner Gordon Brothers is understood to believe it can raise more money from breaking up the discount retailer than from accepting a management-backed rescue bid.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Walsall-based chain\u2019s management is due to meet Kate Dearden, the minister for the future of work, tomorrow, as political pressure mounts on Gordon Brothers to accept the offer from Martin Property Group.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Poundland is protected from creditors until 12 November after its directors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2118781-12000-jobs-at-risk-as-poundland-bosses-prepare-to-file-for-administration\">filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators<\/a> last week, putting around 12,000 jobs at risk. AlixPartners is lined up to run the process.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2026\/nov\/03\/poundland-staff-out-of-work-for-years-warning-founder\">The Guardian<\/a>, Martin Property Group has offered around \u00a37.5m upfront and the same again in deferred payments over two years, covering half of the \u00a330m shareholder loan. The deal would also involve taking on an asset-backed loan worth around \u00a390m.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2118836-poundland-wasn%e2%80%99t-killed-by-the-cost-of-living-crisis\">Poundland wasn\u2019t killed by the cost of living crisis<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pepco, Poundland\u2019s former owner, holds the other \u00a37.5m of the loan and has offered to wait for repayment in an effort to save the business.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It comes after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2118886-business-secretary-demands-answers-from-poundland-owner-as-12000-jobs-hang-in-balance\">Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds warned that Gordon Brothers<\/a> had \u201cserious questions to answer\u201d if it had rejected a bid that could have avoided administration.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebusinessdesk.com\/westmidlands\/news\/2118875-poundland-founder-hits-out-at-owner-over-administration-despite-rising-sales\">Founder Steve Smit<\/a>h, who has backed the management bid warned that staff could be out of work for \u201cyears\u201d if the business collapses.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIf they have got offers on the table, why is Gordon Brothers not taking it and saving all these people?\u201d he said. \u201cRetail is hard out there and if these people lose their job it could be a couple of years before they get jobs again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He added: \u201cIt is not just 12,000 jobs. Poundland has more than 2,000 suppliers, some only deal with Poundland and some employ hundreds of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gordon Brothers has been approached for
