The Birmingham area has 378, with further strengths in robotics and 3D printing, while Leamington Spa adds advanced manufacturing and electric vehicle expertise.

One business highlighted in the report is Coventry-based Volklec, which is developing battery technology for electric vehicle manufacturing and has received more than £3m in equity investment and £800,000 in innovation grants.

The research also shows how connected the region’s businesses are. Birmingham-headquartered companies frequently have subsidiaries or trading sites elsewhere in the region, with the strongest link to Dudley. There are 4,600 subsidiary and trading-address links between the two, around 6.6 times what would normally be expected.

Leamington Spa recorded annual growth of around 7% in the number of equity deals. If recent trends continue, the density of high-growth companies in both Birmingham and Leamington Spa could rise by more than 40% by 2035.

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “Manufacturing built the West Midlands, and it will play a critical role in our future prosperity too. This research highlights the strength of our industrial base and the growing concentration of businesses in high-value sectors such as electric vehicles, robotics and <a at Barclays, said: “What stands out is the combination of specialist strengths across Birmingham, Coventry and Leamington Spa, alongside the wider business connections that stretch across the Black Country, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.”

Nationally, the report warns that the number of high-growth companies that have raised one equity round but not a second
