WAKEFIELD-based Top Gear Recruitment, a specialist in supply chain recruitment, has boosted its specialist driver training team with the hire of Paul Rowlands.

Mr Rowlands joins existing division members Brian Coffey and Paul Gentle, alongside lead driver trainer and CPC assessor John Heywood, to boost the company’s dedicated driver training service in the Wakefield area.

Established in 2004, Top Gear’s specialist training academy aims to provide drivers with valuable experience and training to develop the skills of the region’s HGV workforce.

James Mallick, operations director at Top Gear, said: “The current shortage of drivers is a real concern. There’s a limited amount of new blood coming into the HGV industry and strict qualifications must be met. We’re aiming to attract a significant number of new drivers to the sector through this training.

“So far, the scheme is proving to be hugely successful. Paul’s appointment will help us to continue developing the skills of our drivers and increase fuel efficiency, whilst simultaneously reducing accidents and tachograph infringements. With a number of new clients coming on board in the next few months, we expect to recruit another two driver trainers to meet the demand.”
