Leeds law students honoured in legal competition

LAW students from Leeds universities have been awarded top prizes in the Leeds Legal Essay Competition.

Students studying law at Leeds Metropolitan University, University of Leeds and the BPP Law School were offered the opportunity to enter the competition, which invited them to write a 5,000 essay on topical legal issues.

Five students received awards at the prize-giving ceremony at the Hilton Hotel, hosted by Leeds Legal.

The top prize went to Leeds Met student, Tom Royston for his employment law essay.

Mr Royston was awarded a £1,000 cash prize and a summer placement working at law firm Lupton Fawcett.

Student Corrine Manfield of Leeds Met won the runner-up prize of £250 and a two-week placement at Shulmans Solicitors.

Three other students, Nicholas Dent from Leeds Met, Sharmeen Musaj from University of Leeds and Chris Robinson from BPP law School, also received work placements at firms, Pinsent Masons, Gordons and Irwin Mitchell.

Alan M. Baker, chairman of Leeds Legal, said: “We launched the competition this year to give budding lawyers the opportunity to explore topical legal issues for the chance to win some great prizes.

” The standard of submissions has been incredibly high. There are clearly a lot of young, talented lawyers in the city, which is great to see. “
