MicrometalsmithsKIRKBYMOORSIDE-based Micro Metalsmiths has completed work on a rapid prototyping project for I-pix, a leading LED lighting fixtures manufacturer for the entertainment and architectural industry.

The project involved developing engineered castings for a housing to be used on a new high power LED-based lighting system.

Micro Metalsmiths developed the housing with the I-Pix design team, who had produced a model of the product to check heat dissipation requirements.

From the rapid prototype aluminum part the company machined and assembled the solution with prototype electronics before thermal testing was carried out.

The prototype allowed I-pix to verify calculations and to check the complete fit of the solution before sending it into production.

Compared to other processes such as pressure casting, rapid prototyping can save companies time and money.
