‘Stay local’ Government guidance returns for a Yorkshire district

The Government has advised people not to travel into and out of areas hardest hit by the Indian variant of Covid-19 – including Kirklees district in West Yorkshire.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin has responded stating the advice could cause “anxiety and confusion”.
Kirklees is one of eight areas where health officials say the variant is spreading fastest, with the other districts being Bolton, Blackburn, Bedford, Burnley, Leicester, Hounslow and North Tyneside.
Alongside the travel advice, people living in the affected areas are also asked not to meet indoors.
On Friday, the Government issued guidance on its website where it recommended those living in the listed areas:
- Meet outside rather than inside where possible
- Keep two metres apart from people who you do not live with (unless you have formed a support bubble with them), this includes friends and family you don’t live with
- Avoid travelling in and out of affected areas unless it is essential, for example for work (if you cannot work from home) or education
It appears the guidance update on Friday, came without any Government public announcement, to include the eight affected areas – although it was first given earlier in the month for Blackburn and Bolton.
Brabin said she would be raising the issue with Government vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi at a meeting today.
“If Government are concerned we need clear guidance and support, not advice that could cause anxiety and confusion,” she added.
