Family-owned manufacturer targets disused site for expansion

One of Kirklees’ largest family run manufacturers, John Cotton Group, wants to signficantly expand its Mirfield operations.  

If approved, the proposals would see the redundant and vacant former Yorkshire Water site at Cooper Bridge, next to John Cotton’s Mirfield headquarters, regenerated to deliver more storage space for the company.

The business produces nonwoven products for a variety of markets sectors, including mattress fillings, home insulation, air filtration, automotive components, upholstery and insulated packaging media. 

Mark Cotton, chairman of the group, said: “John Cotton has been headquartered in Mirfield for over 60 years and the plans represent a major  investment in the town and Kirklees, whilst creating local jobs.

“The development will increase the efficiency of the business and reduce the need for HGV travel between our other local sites. 

“The site has been redundant for several years and our proposals will bring it back into a meaningful use. 

“We encourage the local community to come along to our event and we welcome all feedback.” 

The large, brownfield site has been allocated in Kirklees Council’s Local Plan for employment use.

An outline application is being prepared for the land, which includes plans for a new warehouse facility of around 300,000 sq ft. The plans are also intended to improve car parking for John Cotton Group and to aid circulation around the site. 

People are invited to view the proposals at a consultation event on Wednesday 21 June at Mirfield Community Centre between 3pm and 6.30pm.
