Asda launches degree course for staff

ASDA is rolling out a three-year degree programme for its staff.
The course, one of the first of its kind by a UK retailer, will offer 30 Asda colleagues the opportunity to study for a BA (Hons) degree in either distribution or retail operations, while retaining their job in store.
Fully funded by the Leeds–headquartered supermarket, students on the retail degree will learn about merchandising, the retail environment, managing and developing people and managing retail operations to maximise a profit. Those on the distribution programme will study specific modules in supply chain management and logistic operations.
The course, in partnership with Middlesex University, following a successful pilot last year, will involve 12 days of classroom workshops, work-based assessment, online study and peer networking.
Hayley Tatum, executive people director at Asda, said: “The current economic climate – coupled with the spiraling costs of higher education – means that many of our colleagues have missed out on university degrees.
“By providing the opportunity to study for a degree, we hope we can open more doors for our colleagues, developing their skills for the future. Through the programme, we hope to create a pool of home grown talent and the future leaders of Asda.”
Offers will be made at the end of this month for an October start.
