People: Senior appointments at KPMG and Saffery Champness; Partner hire for Appleyard Lees

KPMG has announced the appointment of Nick Pheasey as its head of private client advisory in the North.
 
Mr Pheasey has been a partner at KPMG since 2013 and has over 19 years of tax experience, specialising in advising individuals, family offices, entrepreneurs and shareholders on their personal tax issues.
 
Based in the North West, he spent the first 16 years of his career in Leeds and has continued to work with clients across the north.  Mr Pheasey will be spending more time back in Yorkshire in his new role alongside Jonathan Turner, private client director.
 
Another KPMG Leeds office alumni, Greg Limb, has been made head of private client advisory nationally.  After 18 years in Yorkshire, he became a partner at KPMG in 2008 with a focus on the London market but his home remains in North Yorkshire and his new role will see him again spending considerable time in the Yorkshire market.

Saffery Champness Dermot Callinan Following KPMG’s appointment of Nick Pheasey, accountancy firm Saffery Champness has announced that Dermot Callinan has been recruited as a partner in its Harrogate office, joing from KPMG where he recently served as head of the UK private client advisory team.

Mr Callinan is a specialist in domestic and international personal taxation and his clients include wealthy individuals (both UK and non-UK domiciled), global families, family offices, partnerships, entrepreneurs, trustees and family companies. While based at Saffery Champness’ Harrogate office, he will be servicing client needs across the UK. 

Mr Callinan has advised on personal taxation for over 30 years and at KPMG was responsible for a team of more than 170 tax professionals, including 18 partners and directors. He has led UK and international tax advice to shareholders on some of the largest and most complex private company disposals, stock market listings and private equity transactions. He also advises complex multi-generational trusts, family offices and family investment companies.

Prior to joining KPMG in 1991, he worked with EY and Deloitte Haskins & Sells.

Julia Gwilt Appleyard LeesUK and European patent and trade mark attorney Appleyard Lees has appointed electronic patent specialist Julia Gwilt as a partner to spearhead the firm’s continuing expansion. 

Ms Gwilt joins Appleyard Lees after 19 years in the profession including six years as a partner at Marks & Clerk. Over the years, she has worked with clients securing patent portfolios for software inventions with complex mathematics at their core including loudspeakers, the oil industry and bioinformatics.  Ms Gwilt has also worked in other technical fields including consumer products such as sanitary ware, hair-care devices and e-readers.

As well as managing the prosecution of patent portfolios covering the UK and overseas, Ms Gwilt has also has managed over 70 oppositions to European patents, primarily in the field of electronic program guides. 

Appleyard Lees managing director Joanne King said: “Julia joins us at a key time in our growth trajectory and will be playing a vital role in consolidating and growing our presence and client base in the tech and electronic sectors both within and beyond the North of England.”

Ms Gwilt’s appointment brings the firm’s number of partners to 15 and to a total headcount of just over 100.
