Carbon footprint and cost saving gain for Claro

A NEW piece of equipment is set to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of Knaresborough-based Claro Precision Engineering.
The Atlas Copco variable speed air compressor is being hailed as a “valuable addition” to Claro’s portfolio of specialist equipment.
Its purchase was aided with a grant from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS and an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust.
The system will circulate air around Claro’s manufacturing facility to all its milling and turning machines much more efficiently and as a consequence large amounts of energy wastage are eliminated.
The energy savings in the first year of operation alone will be 85,000 kWh of electricity, which equates to 46,000kg of CO2.
In addition, the heat generated by the compressor has been ducted to the heating of the factory, providing extra energy efficiencies.
Martin Doxey, managing director at Claro said: ‘A key part of Claro Precision’s mission is to minimise our impact on the environment.
“After examining our manufacturing processes and procedures last year, we concluded that we could save money and substantially reduce our carbon footprint by installing a state-of-the-art compressed air facility.”
He added: The combination of a MAS grant and interest free loan from the Carbon Trust meant that the investment gave us a positive cash flow – we were never out of pocket. Now that we are in recession, the ongoing cost savings are helping us to compete in a very tight market.’
Established in 1978, Claro specialises in precision machining and machined parts.
The company has won numerous awards for its subcontract machining expertise and the supply of precision machined parts and also holds both AS9100 Aerospace accreditation and ISO 9001.
