Hyco move will create jobs

ELECTRICAL equipment manufacturer and distributor Hyco Manufacturing is creating new jobs with a move to purpose-built premises.

Hyco is moving to a 26,000 sq ft site at Normanby Court at Wakefield Europort more than doubling the size of its existing 12,000 sq ft premises, which are also on the same business park.

Building work has started on the site and is due for completion by May next year.

The move will enable the manufacturer of water and space heating equipment to expand its research and development facilities, introduce a dedicated assembly line as well as increase stock-holding facilities, including electric water heating, space heating equipment and hand dryers.

In an interview with TheBusinessDesk.com earlier this year, husband and wife team Mike and Kirsty McHugh, who run Hyco, said they wanted to bring production back to the UK from China and growing demand for Hyco’s electric water and space heating ranges have helped to prompt the move.

Sales at the company increased by 20% to £3.2m in 2009/10 compared to the previous year.

The expansion will also see Hyco increase the size of its workforce by 50% over the next two to three years, from 15 to 23 staff.

Managing director Mr McHugh said: “Our current premises have served us well but we now need a bigger and more flexible site.

“With 26,000 sq ft, we’ll be able to do so much more and meet the demands of our growing list of customers. It is also exciting that the move means we will be creating new jobs at a time when unemployment is escalating.

“Wakefield Europort provides great flexibility and excellent transport links and staying local will mean minimum change for our employees and for the many customers who collect directly.”

Family-owned Hyco sells to wholesalers and distributors only and does not deal with the general public and its customers include leading electrical wholesalers and plumbers’ merchants including Travis Perkins, which this year named Hyco as a preferred supplier of electric water heating.

The company’s products are used in locations such as offices, schools, hospitals, pubs, restaurants and flats.
