STUDENTS from a Yorkshire high school have been sharing their tips for running a successful social enterprise with a government policy manager on enterprise education.

Suzy Alderson, executive director of the Young People’s Enterprise Forum (YPEF) invited Chris Stacey from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, to see how Yorkshire and Humber’s approach to enterprise education is helping young people run real businesses.

The visit included a visit to Cockburn College of Arts in Leeds, where the Yorkshire Forward funded Social Enterprise in Education programme involves young people throughout the school in a number of growth business activities which benefit the local community.

The programme, developed by Education Leeds, led to the setting up of The Glassroom, run by year 10 and 11 students, to recycle free off cuts of unwanted glass from Greenberg Glass, a local window maker, to make quality glassware products.

Turnover is around £4,500 a year, with the award winning social enterprise to date recycling several hundred kilos of glass and saving the costs of removal for their supplier. The glass is sold in school, at craft fairs and at an outlet in the atrium of Pinsent Masons’ offices in Leeds city centre.
