YORKSHIRE firms could see a growth in interest from Chinese firms thanks to a delegation visit spearheaded by Leeds Legal, UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and Marketing Leeds.

The 10 strong group of lawyers and business leaders from across the region discussed property, development, and regeneration in the Hong Kong and Zhejiang regions with representatives from the British Consulate, China Britain Business Council, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and a number of international law firms.

Hong Kong and Chinese business leaders in turn were keen to explore property investment in the UK, particularly in Yorkshire, with many using the legal delegates to gain more information and insight into opportunities.

Colin Russell, a Leeds-based specialist with UKTI who was part of the delegation, said that the visit was an important one.

“Figures from 2006 show that total trade involving Yorkshire and Humber was worth more than £1.2bn with China and over £680m with Hong Kong,” he said.

“That shows there are already well established connections, but by getting involved in initiatives such as this and developing closer links, we will only enhance these figures further.”

Representatives from Leeds Legal, the organisation charged with raising the profile of the profession in Leeds, and Harewood House were also invited on the fact finding trip.

Deborah Green, chief operating officer of Marketing Leeds and a director of Leeds Legal, said they had all received a very warm welcome from civic, business and cultural leaders and had made significant progress in establishing a network of contacts and real interest.

“After our first visit to Hong Kong in May, we were convinced that there were many opportunities to explore. With help from UKTI, we put together a programme that would allow our professional service and cultural sectors to be highlighted during this trip,” she said.

Earlier this year Forward Ladies also ran a visit to China. Another trip is also being planned by Leeds Legal in the near future.
