Gameshow contestant’s enterprising ambition

AN East Yorkshire man has used his ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ winnings to launch his own business.

Wetwang-based Allan Bulwich had just been told he was to be made redundant and he and his wife were facing homelessness before the call came to say he had been selected as a contestant on the popular ITV show.

Fast finger action got him through the elimination process and he went on to win a “substantial sum”, which will be revealed when the programmes airs on July 18.

The business – Hot Coffee Photography – has already attracted a steady stream of corporate and personal clients for events such as weddings.

Mr Bulwich said that he had always wanted to be his own boss and his success on the show enabled him to follow his long-standing passion for photography.

“During filming in the studio I was under immense pressure because I knew I had to win some big money so when I was quickest at ‘the fastest finger’ I went completely over the top,” he said.

“Chris Tarrant took the mickey out of me but it was worth it. I truly understand the value of seizing the moment, which has stood me in good stead with the development of my business.”

The former global account manager turned to Business Link Yorkshire for advice on how to launch the start-up.

Adviser Neale Lucas helped him formulate ideas, establish company structure and a business plan and brokered free consultation time with a graphic designer and marketing specialist.

“Business Link was crucial in getting in my business going,” said Mr Bulwich.

“I got so much help from them and tons of valuable advice from the experts they recommended. Anybody who wants to start up shouldn’t be trying to do it alone.”

Mr Lucas said he had been impressed by Mr Bulwich’s drive.

“Allan is an inspirational example of someone turning a disadvantage to his advantage and changing his life pattern. Turning a hobby or talent into a business is a great way to self-employment,” he added.
