Turner & Townsend sees profits building

TURNER & Townsend, the Yorkshire-based construction consultancy has enjoyed a strong rise in profits on the back of its work for clients across the globe.

The Leeds firm saw pre-tax profits increase 22% to £20.8m in the year to April 30 on the back of an 18% rise in revenues to £211m.

The firm, which was project manager for the new Leeds City Museum and cost manager for the Leeds Metropolitan University Rose Bowl building, has won work overseas with customers in the mining, infrastructure, energy and oil industries.

It has expanded operations over the last 12 months into Chile, Qatar and Vietnam and won contracts for the Barclays-Lehman Brothers integration project in New York and with Rolls-Royce in Singapore.

Chairman Tim Wray said T&T still has ambitions to float on the stock market and has a £341m order book. It has reduced its workforce by around 5% over the last 12 months to 2,400 staff.

The firm is project manager for The Shard in London Bridge which will be the tallest building in Western Europe at 1,016ft (310m) when it opens in three years and it carried out a similar role for the Beijing Great Wheel in China.
