Waste battle victory marks “milestone” for Augean

THE chairman of Yorkshire waste firm Augean said this morning that the company’s victory in its fight to bury low level waste at its Northamptonshire site is a “significant milestone”.
Wetherby-based Augean was looking for permission to dispose of construction, demolition and some nuclear materials at the site near Duddington.
Planning permission was initially refused by Northamptonshire County Council and the company has also faced opposition to the plans from the local community.
But last month Communities Secretary Eric Pickles gave the go-ahead for Augean’s plans.
Roger McDowell said: “This is a significant milestone for Augean and we expect that the site will be able to start receiving low level waste from quarter four this year and into 2012.
“We are conscious that the subject has provoked significant debate and the group is committed to engaging with local communities on an ongoing basis to address any concerns.
“The group continues to make good progress with its wider growth strategy and the board remains optimistic about delivering our original expectations for the remainder of the year.”
