Recycled fuel project looking for volunteers

VOLUNTEERS for a innovative recycled fuel oil project that could cut transport costs and reduce carbon emissions are being sought by CO2Sense Yorkshire.

The newly launched Yorkshire Forward funded consultancy, created to help the region’s businesses reduce their carbon emissions, is supporting trials that will investigate the commercial viability of using waste vegetable oil collected and processed in Yorkshire to fuel cars, trucks and buses.

Businesses volunteering to take part in the project will receive 3,000 litres of 100% waste vegetable oil biodiesel fuel free of charge.

Vehicles using the biodiesel fuel will be monitored between December and February next year and records of their performance will be used to further develop recycled oil services.

Commenting on this fuel innovation Andy Lowe, CO2Sense Yorkshire’s manager for food waste, said: “This demonstration project could be a real breakthrough in our drive to cut business costs and environmental impacts.

“We would like companies to volunteer a vehicle, run it on its normal routes and report back to us on the vehicle’s performance.”

The biodiesel fuel demonstration project is being run by CO2Sense Yorkshire in partnership with a regional producer of biodiesel.

Andy Hartley, operations director for CO2Sense Yorkshire, said: “Biodiesel has the potential to transform the environmental impact of road travel and reduce business operating costs.

“This project will lead to the development of biodiesel sources and supply within Yorkshire. It is a great addition to our local economy and create many much-needed green collar jobs. The project will also lead to the increased diversion of a biodegradable waste away from landfill.”

CO2Sense Yorkshire is also keen to hear from all collectors of waste cooking and other oils, and from all regional producers of biodiesel.

Volunteers need to contact Andy Lowe by emailing info@ResourceEfficiency-Yorkshire.org.uk, by 1pm onNovember 30 to be considered for the project.
