Yorkshire firms among sales leaders

FOUR Yorkshire companies feature in a new league table of Britain’s top 100 private companies with the biggest sales.

Ranked 47th, Yorkshire Water parent Kelda Group is the highest placed regional firm in the Sunday Times Deloitte Top Track 100 after enjoying sales growth of 7% to £987m last year.

Doncaster-based furniture retailer DFS registered sales worth £653m in 2010, placing it 85th in the list, despite some of the toughest conditions for retailers for a generation.

Car dealer JCT600 and housebuilder Keepmoat appear 94th and 95th in the table with sales of just over £600m.

Martin Jenkins, practice senior partner of Deloitte’s Leeds office, said: “Large private companies are playing an increasingly important role in the UK’s economy, and it is great to see Yorkshire feature again in this year’s league table.

“While current macroeconomic conditions leave no room for complacency, the featured companies have proved their resilience and adaptability, and they continue to make an invaluable contribution towards sustaining jobs and growth.”

Despite the tough economic conditions, 78 of the 100 firms featured in the list saw sales grow on the previous year. Of the companies listed, 47 are backed by private equity with the remainder owned by familes, management or entrepreneurs.
