Hargreaves confirms fatality at Yorkshire mine

HARGREAVES Services confirmed today the death of one its workers at the Maltby Colliery near Rotherham.

Hargreaves, which bought the remaining 50% interest in Yorkshire-based Coal4Energy earlier this year, said it extended its “sincere condolences” to the family of Jackie Fisher, who was discovered by a colleague on Monday.

Colliery management are working alongside the Health and Safety Executive, which will be continuing the investigation.

Mr Fisher, 52, lived in the Edlington area near Doncaster. He spent all his working life in the mining industry starting at the Yorkshire Main pit in 1972 before moving to Maltby Colliery in 1985.

Production at the mine recommenced last night.

Commenting on the tragedy, Gordon Banham, chief executive, said:

“Our sincere condolences go out to Mr Fisher’s family and friends. The loss of a colleague is felt deeply both at Maltby and across the group. There will be full support for our colleagues who are directly affected.”
