Scarborough Spa gets funding boost

HISTORIC Scarborough Spa is set to be redeveloped after £4m of funding was approved for the work.
Regional development agency has approed the funding as part of its ongoing Renaissance Programme.
Jan Anderson, director of environment at Yorkshire Forward, said: “Following the disappointment of the Sea Change bid, Yorkshire Forward was determined to continue its support for Scarborough’s economic renaissance and can confirm that £4m has been approved by the Yorkshire Forward board towards the redevelopment of Scarborough Spa which will include improvements to the Spa’s front of house Grand Hall, as well as the back of house which will bring greater operational efficiency and flexibility to the Spa.”
The funding aims to help redevelop areas of the Spa that will bring the most immediate economic benefits to Scarborough.
The refurbishments will focus on the lobby, bar area, and upgrades to the back of house including the Aquarium Top car park and the Spa Approach Road.
Ms Anderson added: “Scarborough is not only Europe’s most enterprising place, but has also recently won the Academy of Urbanism’s nationa Great Town award.”
The redevelopment work is set to start in January.
Coun Derek Bastiman, cabinet member for regeneration and strategic planning at Scarborough Borough Council, said: “We are delighted that we have secured this important funding from Yorkshire Forward, which will allow us to move forward with a significant development scheme for the Spa and surrounding public realm.
“The development will bring huge economic benefits to Scarborough and the wider borough and really put Scarborough Spa on the national map.”
