Five more days of Fujitsu strikes over 1,800 planned job cuts

Five more days of strike action have been called by union Unite after long-running disputes and a background of 1,800 planned job cuts.

The long-running disputes have come to a head this year over pay, pensions, job security and union recognition.

It has said that nearly 2,000 jobs are at risk due to outsourcing overseas. The union called it an “ill-considered move”.

Now Unite has announced a two-day strike from 18 May one on 22 May, and a two days from 25 May, in addition to the strike happening tomorrow and another on 11 May.

The strikes will include staff from its Wakefield facility, as well as Basingstoke, Belfast, Birmingham, Bracknell, Crewe, Edinburgh, London, Manchester, Stevenage and Warrington.

Unite national officer Ian Tonks said: “The announcement of five days of new strikes demonstrates the determination of our members to fight for their jobs and employment conditions and our adamant opposition to ‘exporting’ skilled UK jobs abroad.

“The UK management of Fujitsu is intransigent and refuses to engage with its dedicated and hardworking employees. Our members will continue their fight – and the fact that 20 days of strike action has or will be held is a mark of their strong resolution.”

Last month Unite handed in a letter to the ambassador Mr Koji Tsuruoka in London criticising the ‘shameful way’ that the UK management has behaved over the proposed job losses.
